"Dick Cole's War: Doolittle Raider, Hump Pilot, Air Commando" with author Dennis Okerstrom

Thursday, November 16, 2017

Dick Cole was a member of the Doolittle Raiders who flew their B-25s on a bombing run over Tokyo just four months after Pearl Harbor. When that mission was complete Cole was assigned to Ferrying Command, flying the Hump of the Himalayas for a year in the world’s worst weather, with inadequate aircraft, few navigation aids, and inaccurate maps. More than 600 aircraft with their crews were lost during this effort to keep China in the war, but Cole survived and rotated home in 1943. Just a few months later he was recruited for the First Air Commandos, returning to India to participate in the aerial invasion of Burma. Join us at this presentation by author Dennis Okerstrom, Professor of English at Park University in Missouri and the author of four previous books. A certified flight instructor, he owns and flies a restored 1942 Army scout plane. A light lunch will be provided, courtesy of the Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation.
