Evenings at Ease: Ike Book TALK "Once Upon a Town" by Bob Greene
Tuesday, August 13, 2019
The 2019 Ike Book TALK series is marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day by exploring some of the lesser known stories of World War II. In "Once Upon a Town," author Bob Greene tells of North Platte, Nebraska's citizenry, who found a unique way to express their patriotism as American soldiers rolled through North Platte on troop trains en route to Europe and the Pacific. The town transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen, giving the troops a final home-cooked meal, baskets of food and treats to more than six million GIs before they headed off to war. This discussion will be led by Kansas State University professor Michaeline Chance-Reay. Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) is presented by Humanities Kansas in partnership with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and the Abilene Public Library. Books in the series can be checked out of the Abilene Public Library and are available for purchase at the Eisenhower Presidential Library gift shop.
