Movie: "The Five Pennies," Paul H. Royer Film Series

Thursday, March 21, 2019

"The Five Pennies" is a semi-biographical 1959 film starring Danny Kaye as bandleader Loring "Red" Nichols. In the 1920s, Nichols joins a New York City band led by Wil Paradise (Bob Crosby), and sits in on a speakeasy session with Louis Armstrong. He meets his future wife, a singer (Barbara Bel Geddes), and the two form their own band, "The Five Pennies" (a play on Nichols' name - a nickel equals five pennies). As their popularity peaks, their young daughter Dorothy contracts polio and the family leaves the music business. As a teenager, Dorothy (Tuesday Weld) learns of her father's music career and persuades him go on a comeback tour, which stuggles until it's saved by several notable musicians from Nichols' past. The 28th annual Paul H. Royer Film Series is sponsored by Robert H. (Hank) Royer, Jr., in memory of his grandfather, who was an Abilene High School classmate of Dwight D. Eisenhower and founding member of the Eisenhower Foundation. The film is free and open to the public.
