Movie: "First Man" [2018] - Arts Council of Dickinson County Winter Film Festival

Sunday, January 19, 2020

"First Man" is the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, Apollo 11 in 1969. Based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film explores the triumphs and the cost—on Neil Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself—of one of the most dangerous missions in history. The film explores Armstrong’s life through his own eyes. The emotional center of the film is not Armstrong’s eventual space walk, but the early loss of his daughter to childhood cancer. The writer and director worked closely with book author Hansen, Armstrong's family and fellow astronauts and NASA brass Mike Collins, Buzz Aldrin, Dave Scott, Frank Hughes, and Joe Engle. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong with Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Dickinson County in partnership with the Eisenhower Presidential Library, all films are free and open to the public. The Arts Council suggests bringing toiletry items for the Abilene Area Food Pantry.
