75th D-Day Commemoration Remembrance Ceremony

Thursday, June 6, 2019

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, 75 years ago, more than 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. The public is invited to honor Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and the soldiers he led in World War II. The Remembrance Ceremony will feature a keynote address from Gen. Richard Myers, USAF (Ret.), former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and current president of Kansas State University; remarks by Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of General Eisenhower; a wreath-laying by representatives from four Allied countries; music by the Abilene High School Women’s Select Chorus; and the playing of “Taps” with a rifle salute courtesy of Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division Band. More than 60 World War II veterans plan to attend the ceremony, as well as several “Rosie the Riveters” who worked in factories, and a labor camp survivor. These honored guests will be available for a “meet and greet” following the ceremony until 11:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
