Exhibits

  1. De Gaulle / Eisenhower: Alliance and Friendship in War and Peace

    September 23, 2019, 9:00 AM - February 2, 2020, 4:45 PM @ Museum Special Exhibit Gallery

General Charles de Gaulle and General Eisenhower both belong to the common national heritage of their respective countries. The two met for the first time in June 1943 in Algiers, and De Gaulle presented Eisenhower with the Cross of Companion of Liberation in June 1945. Both were heads of state during the Cold War. Their work is a source of reflection and inspiration for today’s world. The Charles de Gaulle Foundation and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, in partnership with the Eisenhower Foundation, strive to promote and honor the legacies of these great leaders. Together these institutions collaborated with the Musée de l’Armée (French Army Museum), to create this exhibition, which will contribute to strengthening the bonds between France and the United States. We are grateful to The First Alliance Foundation and the David Woods Kemper Memorial Foundation, presenting sponsors, for bringing this exceptional exhibit to Abilene, Kansas.

  1. Lunch and Learn Extra: Marlin Fitzwater, "The Calm Before the Storm"

    October 16, 2019, 12:00 PM @ Visitors Center Auditorium

Marlin Fitzwater returns to his hometown, Abilene, Kansas, to talk about his latest book, which begins at his family's farm and takes us on his journey to the White House, brilliantly painting a picture of what helped produce his rich powers of observation and storytelling. In August 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and President George H.W. Bush's press secretary started a diary. That compilation of private notes, memos and briefings from the Persian Gulf Crisis to the resulting Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm serve as the backdrop of a story that is as much about presidential leadership and American principles as it is about those pivotal moments in history. Marlin Fitzwater served under both Presidents H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan for ten years, 1983-93. This program is free and open to the public, courtesy of Lunch & Learn series sponsors, the Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation and the Eisenhower Foundation. A light lunch will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
