  1. De Gaulle / Eisenhower: Alliance and Friendship in War and Peace

    September 23, 2019, 9:00 AM - February 2, 2020, 4:45 PM @ Museum Special Exhibit Gallery

General Charles de Gaulle and General Eisenhower both belong to the common national heritage of their respective countries. The two met for the first time in June 1943 in Algiers, and De Gaulle presented Eisenhower with the Cross of Companion of Liberation in June 1945. Both were heads of state during the Cold War. Their work is a source of reflection and inspiration for today’s world. The Charles de Gaulle Foundation and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, in partnership with the Eisenhower Foundation, strive to promote and honor the legacies of these great leaders. Together these institutions collaborated with the Musée de l’Armée (French Army Museum), to create this exhibition, which will contribute to strengthening the bonds between France and the United States. We are grateful to The First Alliance Foundation and the David Woods Kemper Memorial Foundation, presenting sponsors, for bringing this exceptional exhibit to Abilene, Kansas.

  1. Meet and Greet Reception with Marlin Fitzwater, celebrating his play, "Empires Fall"

    October 18, 2019, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM @ Library Courtyard

The Eisenhower Foundation and Eisenhower Presidential Library, in partnership with Great Plains Theatre, are pleased to host this opportunity to meet and greet Marlin Fitzwater. His play, "Empires Fall," will open at Great Plains Theatre, just blocks from the reception, at 7:30 that same evening. Fitzwater, the only press secretary in U. S. history to be appointed by two Presidents, chose Abilene, Kansas, his hometown, for the world premiere. "Empires Fall" is about the relationship of President George H.W. Bush and USSR General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in the two years between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Both men attempt to bring an end to the cold war in a fashion that, while being in the best interest of their country, also protects the world. More relevant than ever, "Empires Fall" is a theatrical event not to be missed. The play runs October 18 - 27. Visit the Great Plains Theatre website for more information or to purchase tickets.
