Movie: "The Bookshop" [2017] - Arts Council of Dickinson County Winter Film Festival

Sunday, January 12, 2020

In 1959 England, free-spirited widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) opens a bookshop in a conservative coastal town. While she earns the support and affection of a reclusive book loving widower (Bill Nighy), the chief thorn in Florence’s side is Violet Gamart (Patricia Clarkson), a wealthy, delicately ruthless grand dame who, for reasons that have more to do with power than intellectual fervor, claims that she wants to turn the building into an arts center — and will stop at nothing to have her way; a chilling reminder of those who lie in wait to derail smart, independent thinkers like Florence. Based on Penelope Fitzgerald's acclaimed novel, "The Bookshop" is a parable about personal resolve, power, and suppression. This series is sponsored by the Arts Council of Dickinson County in partnership with the Eisenhower Presidential Library. All films are free and open to the public. You're invited to bring toiletry items which the Arts Council will donate to the Abilene Area Food Pantry.
