Movie: "Green Book" [2018] - Arts Council of Dickinson County Winter Film Festival

Sunday, February 23, 2020

"Green Book" is inspired by the true story of Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class African-American classical and jazz pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony “Lip” Vallelonga, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx. They begin their trek armed with "The Negro Motorist Green Book," a guide for safe travel through America's racial segregation. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation. Co-written by Tony's son, Nick, from interviews with his father and Don Shirley, and letters his father wrote to his mother. This is the final film of the Arts Council of Dickinson County 2020 series. The film is free and open to the public. The Arts Council will accept toiletry items for donation to the Abilene Area Food Pantry.
