BIOGRAPHY

By the time he turned 18 in 1943, World War II was raging and John Carson joined the Navy through a special program designed to churn out good officers for the war effort. He attended Columbia University and was commissioned an ensign before the war's end. Assigned to the battleship USS Pennsylvania, which survived Pearl Harbor, his duties were to decode encrypted enemy radio traffic. Ever the entertainer, Carson recalled that the high point of his military career was performing a magic trick for Navy Secretary James Forrestal. Carson left the service in 1946. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Carson did a string of shows on CBS, NBC and ABC, but he made his name in 1962 when he took over hosting "The Tonight Show," then known simply as "Tonight." The show started in 1954 with Army veteran Steve Allen as host. Fellow Army vet Jack Paar took over hosting duties in 1957, but when Carson came in, he made it his own. Over the course of the next 30 years, Carson not only achieved Benny's prediction of stardom, he became an entertainment business kingmaker, launching the careers of some of the biggest names in comedy, including David Letterman, Robin Williams, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Arsenio Hall, Jeff Foxworthy, Ellen DeGeneres, Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, David Brenner, Tim Allen, Drew Carey, Howie Mandel and Roseanne Barr. Carson retired in 1992, handing the reins of the show to Jay Leno. Courtesy of Military.com

Rickover started his program to create nuclear-powered submarines, Carted wanted to join the program and was selected by Rickover. Carter was promoted to lieutenant and served on temporary duty with the Naval Reactors Branch, US Atomic Energy Commission, Washington DC to assist in the design and development of nuclear propulsion plants for naval vessels. Carter did not get assigned to a submarine as he returned home when his father became ill, was given an honorable discard and took over the family business. BIOGRAPHY

During the Battle of the Ardennes (Hurtgen Forest and Bulge) my father flew a Piper L-4 'Grasshopper' over enemy territory to spot and direct artillery fire on the enemy and he sometimes joked about having to fly high enough to avoid being shot down by German soldiers and low enough to avoid be being shot down by German pilots -- he came home with a 1' vertical scar in the middle of his forehead and a hole in the brim of his flight cap due to a German soldier's bullet.

My father was an 'Official Witness' to the execution of Private Eddie Slovak.

While teaching 'Artillery Tactics' to ROTC students at Gloucester MA High School from 1951-1953 my father took the GHS ROTC rifle team to West Point and beat the West Point rifle team. My father also led the GHS ROTC class during Ike's first Inaugural Parade.

My father is buried where he always wanted to be...America's most Hallowed place...Arlington National Cemetery...Section 60, Grave 6962...coincidently(?) adjacent to Eisenhower Road and Bradley Road, and directly opposite MacArthur Road...all of whom he served under in combat.

My mother passed this past December 7th (coincidently my father's Birthday) and is once again and forevermore where she always wanted to be...with her 'Jimmy of the 172nd' (New Hampshire National Guard)
