BIOGRAPHY

Carl Mills was born March 25th, 1927 in Winfield, KS. He grew up on a ranch northwest of Cedar Vale, KS and went to high school there until he enlisted in the Navy in April of 1945. Carl remembers his first day of service as staying in a hotel in Kansas City before traveling to the Great Lakes for training. His highest rank was Motor Machinist 3rd Class for the USS Pledge AM277. He served in the Pacific Theatre late in the war and endured what he later discovered was a tsunami on the coast of Hawaii in April of 1946. After the service, Carl attended K-State, where it was crowded with Veterans. He then returned to the ranch where he worked on his family's land until the mid 1980's ranch economy crashed. He then transitioned into working for the county as an appraiser for the tax department until his retirement at the age of 74 years in 2001. He then worked part-time for the Kansas State Department of Revenue for 8 years.

BIOGRAPHY

Earl Mills was born at home on April 26, 1921 in Suwannee County Florida. He attended Midway a country school located off Hwy 49 from first grade to eighth and entered Suwannee High School before joining the US military during his eleventh grade. During his eleventh grade year, mills enlisted into the National Guard in Live Oak, Fl. In November, Mills' status was changed to active duty and he was sent to Camp Blanding. During his time in the service, Mills obtained his GED. Following a short time with the National Guard, Mills enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Benning GA. He was deployed to Normandy and on June 6, 1944, Mills was one of 6,600 troops that invaded Normandy by parachuting from a plane around midnight. In mid July, Mills and his group returned to England to reload and wait for their new assignment. It came September 17, 1944 as they parachuted into Holland. Mills remained in Holland for two months before heading by truck to Mourmelon, France. They resupplied and took on new soldiers. On December 16, German broke through the American lines in Bastogne, Belgium. The 101st including Mills heading to Bastogne by truck on December 18. They marched on from Bastogne until they meet up with the Germans troops. By December 21, the American troops were completely surrounded but kept fighting until General Patton sent in tanks and artillery. This firer power lead to the defeat of the German Army. On January 19, 1945, Mills was wounded by an overhead artillery burst and was taken to a hospital in Paris. He spent a week in the hospital and was returned to the battlefield as they needed everyone that was able to fight. When Mills got out of the service he went home and thirty days later enlisted with the United States Air Force, serving from January 1946 until March of 1961. Mills returned to Suwannee County and took a US Postal Service job.

BIOGRAPHY

Lawrence Minson joined the U.S. Navy in Kansas City, Missouri, and was discharged in Norman, Oklahoma. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Zellars DD777 which was a new ship. He was involved in the invasion of Okinawa and about 100 Japanese planes were also. His ship did get several of them, but one Japanese Kamikaze (suicide plane) hit the Zellars starboard side. Many were lost, injured and burned. This was on April 12, 1945. The ship did not sink, and made it back to Kerma Retto, the refuge for all crippled ships. Then on to Long Beach for repair, which took about 60 days. That was where he was when the war ended and he was thankful to get home to Kansas.

BIOGRAPHY

Yeoman Second Class Lowell Mitchell enlisted on 11 June, 1943 and discharged on 29 January, 1946. He was stationed in at NTS Farragut, Idaho and as a clerk in Hawaii. Lowell received the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

BIOGRAPHY

Geof was a most talented draughtsman and was awarded the British Empire Medal for his work in G-3 SHAEF from its earliest days in Norfolk House, having been in charge of all drawings, maps, orders of battle and Phase maps which accompanied the tactical plan and the deception plans of 'Roundup' subsequently renamed 'overlord'. He flew to Forward HQ in Normandy not long after D-Day and then in September to Versailles and eventually ended the war in the Intelligence Section of Cala (Combined Allied Liquidating Agency). Geof, who is sadly missed, attended (with his wife, Joan) every Reunion of the British SHAEF Association since its formation and having supplied a wonderful account of his life in the Headquarters. Served in the Royal Air.

BIOGRAPHY

Mary Ellen Brown was born April 10, 1920 in Quincy, KS where she lived and graduated High School in 1938. Mary Ellen attended Emporia Sate Teachers College on a violin scholarship, gaining her teaching certificate. She started her teaching career in Rose Hill in 1940. She moved on to teach in Eureka Public Schools and while there, enlisted in the US Navy (WAVES) in March 1944. Mary ELlen reported to duty July 25, 1944 at Hunter College, New York City for six weeks boot camp. She was assigned to Mail School where all aspects of the postal Service were mastered. Upon graduating from Mail School, those with grades in the upper ten percent had a choice of postal stations. Mary Ellen chose the Fleet Post Office in San Francisco, CA. Her first assignment was working in the Fleet Records Section, requiring me to keep the addresses of all Naval Personnel stationed on ships, the Pacific War Zones and those stationed on the west coast, current. Current address allowed the Service men and women's mail to be dispatched as quickly as possible, Next to family, mail was the next priority. Mary Ellen was assigned the addresses card beginning with the letter "H". Other duties performed were working in the V-Mail section in the Fleet Post Office pitching mail and at the time of discharge she was working in Fleet Records as a supervisor checking accuracy and to verify "Missing in Action" and "Deceased" amil was being handled properly and promptly. On December 2, 1945, Mary Ellen married Tech-Sgt. Michael Sissman who had just been discharged. Mary Ellen was discharged on March 4, 1946. The couple lived in CA until 1951 when her husband health failed, they moved back to Kansas. With the GI Bill Mary Ellen went back to college and acquired her Masters Degree in Teaching. After her husband died, she became active in the Eureka Lioness Club and met John Mock through the Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary. Four years later they married.
