BIOGRAPHY

David William Sanders was born in Hope, KS on February 4, 1926. Most called him Bill after his grandfather the city marshal. Sanders attended public school, but did not get to graduate High School as with many, was called into the military. He was inducted into the service on April 4, 1944 and was assigned to the field artillery at Fort Leavenworth, KS. His basic training was at Camp Roberts, CA. A brother, Harley also served in the Army in the European theater.

BIOGRAPHY

Sgt. Robert Dean Sanders was killed in action shortly after arriving in Europe, during the Ardennes Campaign at the Battle of the Bulge. Sgt. Sanders' location at the time of death was Libramont-Chevigny, Arrondissement de Neufchâteau, Luxembourg, Belgium. He was one of twenty-four soldiers killed by an explosion of mines at Libramont, Belgium. Robert Dean Sanders is a brother to WWII veterans Sgt. John L. Sanders and PFC Marvin R. Sanders.

BIOGRAPHY

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Stanley Sanders enlisted in the Iowa State Guard and was inducted into the United States Army. He served in England, France, Germany, Belgium and Austria. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star for gallant performance of duty in ground combat against the enemy.

Walter entered combat on Anzio, Italy in Feb, 1944. He landed in southern France 15 Aug, 1944 and Colmar Pocket in Jan 1944. Walter became a POW at Ottwieler, Germany on 15 March, 1945.

BIOGRAPHY

Jim was called up from the Reserves in March of 1941, and was serving in Washington, D.C. on Pearl Harbor Day. He established the General Headquarters Signal Center in Washington, D.C. From 1942 through 1943, he served in the Greenland Base Command as Company Commander, 23rd Signal Service Co. and Base Signal Officer. On return to the states he attended Command and General Staff School at Leavenworth, KS. He served with Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), European Theater as S-3 and Group Executive Officer in 1944-45. Following the war, he worked in Administration for Carnegie Tech and Westminster College. He was the guiding figure arranging reunions of the 3118th for 25 years. He recorded his war experiences I 'World War II: A Love Story' consisting of his WWII journal and letters to and from his wife Jane.

BIOGRAPHY

Pat graduated from Newton High School in 1939. He was at K-State when the war broke out. It was clear the war effort was going to need a lot of trained pilots and Pat's prior training made him a valuable asset. He entered the war in 1942. Pat was fortunate to spend his war service in the United State ferrying troops, supplies and equipment form one end of the country to the other. Near the end of the war, Pat's unit was converted to B-17's and were preparing to ship out overseas. Pat's wife Mary was pregnant and he was granted three days of leave to be with har in Kansas City. When Pat returned to his base in Nebraska his unit had shipped out without him. As a married man with a child, pat was allowed to stay and continue his service in the States.
