BIOGRAPHY

Dale Bowers enlisted in the Army in April of 1940 in Albuquerque NM. He was sent to Angel, CA for preliminary training and later on to the Hawaiian Islands. Bowers was on duty at Hickam Field at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese made their attack. He spoke of how they were helpless to do much as the raid ripped through Pearl Harbor. Bowers said, "There was not a thing we could do because the attack was so completely a surprise and the destruction so great that our forces were left virtually unprotected that Sunday." Bowers shared that if the attack had been one day later it would have been a different story because reinforcements had been sent in to give new protection to the Amereican Reinforcements. After a short visit home, Bowers finished his military service in Ohio. Courtesy of the Dickinson County Heritage Center
