The Eisenhower Foundation has commissioned a mural to be painted on the Bert & Wetta silo in Abilene, Kansas, and we are looking to our community of Kansans to inspire the design! To submit a design for consideration, please download this information packet and submit the form and designs to Silo@EisenhowerFoundation.net.
Preferred formats include PDF, JPEG, and PNG. The completed mural will be 35' x 54' and, because of the location of the silo, will only be on the area that is visible from the Eisenhower Presidential Library campus — the area that is visible on the submission form (page two of the packet). There are not any size requirements for the submitted art, and the mural will be painted by an already-selected artist.
The community member who submits the selected design will be honored at the unveiling reception in the fall.
Submission are due by April 30, 2024.
Things to keep in mind:
1. The selected design will incorporate elements of the life and legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Themes may include, but are not limited to:
—Ike’s Life in Abilene, Kansas (farming community/rural America/football/baseball/fishing and camping)
—World War II and Ike's military accomplishments (D-Day invasion of Normandy/winning the war in Europe)
—America in the 1950s and Ike’s presidential accomplishments (establishment of the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System/creation of NASA)
2. The selected design will be announced by May 30, 2024. Please note that a professional mural artist will take the selected design and adapt it to meet the needs of the silo being painted.
3. The mural will be completed in the fall of 2024.
4. Open to residents of the state of Kansas.
This project is being completed thanks to generous support from the Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas Creative Arts and Industries Commission (which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency), the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, and Bert & Wetta Sales Inc.
